Good day friends and family here is an update on the exciting new developments of Franciscan Family Farm(s). (though the “s” is in the farm name, there is really only one farm:)
The dew is still on the ground and is covering the cows. Dew covering the cows?! Yes, that’s right! Our fence is done!!! Hooray! We fenced off 10 acres of the corn farm and claimed it for natural grass land. (que the song, “Every Body Dance Now!”) The fence is almost invisable. It is a high tension 6 strand electric smooth wire fence. It is low enough to keep in future farm animals such as pigs, sheep, goats, and the much desired ” Rice Crispy.” (Thomas says this will be the pony’s name when we get one.)
The fence will also need to keep in the newest member of the Franciscan family, Brother Bernardo, our Great Pyranese puppy. I will have to forward a picture of this delightful k9-chicken-protector-in-waiting. He is just too cute! We named him Bernardo because this was one of St. Francis’ first brothers. It only makes sense to name this furry farm hand after a friend of Francis.
Extra! Extra! Scramble all about it! The chickens have begun to lay eggs and we’re gonna shout it! “The chickens have begun to lay eggs!” That’s right everyone! Eggs, lots of them! If you wanna heep’en help’en of these delicious brown balls of flavor and nutrience, well come on down! Really, get on a plane and come here. Every day we open the nest-box roof and there they are, fresher than crispy cream donuts! For the past few days we have been getting about 1/2 of our production potential. Of the 25 chickens there are 12 hens amongst the 13 pullets. The young ladies are still trying to figure out the art of laying. We’ve gotten a few double yolkers and 2 no yolkers. The no yolkers look more like gum balls than eggs!
