I figured out what happened, and edited the post to reflect that fact that you are correct... that article was in 2006. I had seen a post from our friends about a Time article on grass-fed beef, so I searched for it. When I found this one, I thought it was great, and didn't think that there were *two* good articles about grass-fed beef in Time. So now I've linked to both. If you haven't seen the other one, I'd suggest reading it as well. Very informative as well.

Awesome article, thanks for sharing. Interestingly, I noted the date on the article as June 11, 2006. Do you think it was written 3.5 years ago and just now included in the magazine? If so, I wonder how the "Grass Fed Revolution" is going today? Strong, I hope. Either way, thanks for passing it along.

WOW!!!!! I wish I lived closer to Joel Salatin. What an inspirational leader......I could listen to him everyday. His life is definitely a blessing to this world. I will be a devoted listener and learner from now on. It's so good to know we are not alone in desiring a legacy of returning the land to the state in which God created it and intended it to be used.
Thanks Joel Salatin!

Paul,
I have to admit, I didn't watch any more of the show than the portion that was about Food Inc. so I don't know what else she said. I do realize that the show was supposed to be all about a Vegetarian Thanksgiving. I thought this title was pretty funny considering that she had Salatin on.... he takes delight in converting vegetarians back to meat. You're also right about the little comment she was making where she said "it will turn you off". I heard that and I got the impression that she was leading people away from meat instead of to the right kind of meat but she did talk good about grass fed and pasture raised. I think that in the end there were probably lots of people watching that would not consider going vegetarian so I'm so happy that she gave them another option.

I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving too!

Steven,
Well, sort of. I watched the clip after Ethan linked it over at The Beginning Farmer, and yes she did have a lot of good things to say about grass fed/organic/etc over conventional feedlot operations. However, she was still clearly pushing the vegetarian slant...heck, even the title of that show was "Vegetarian Thanksgiving". It was unfortunate that she cut off Robert Kenner right at the end of his interview when he (I think) was going to correct her statement of "Everyone should watch this movie [Food, Inc]...it will turn you off". Turn you off to eating meat, she meant, which wasn't at all the point of the movie. That being said, Mr. Kenner made another comment that probably overrides the whole vegetarian slant, something to the tune of "As more people become aware, they will begin to think about alternatives". And you are right on there, Martha Stewart talking about grass fed, organic, pastured food options will certainly continue to draw attention to the fine work that you and others are doing and create awareness of the better food options that exist.

We ended up getting 14 healthy chicks to add to our laying flock.
I hope we can use that little incubator many more times in the future!

To be more clear, the small water tank that we use is a small barrel that has been cut in half and has a gallagher float valve installed to keep the water level constant in it. This is important because if we were simply filling up a tank I think it would be very difficult to get enough water to supply the herd for the day yet a small enough amount that we could dump the tank and move it EVERY day.

Thanks - we're going to try and take a better video that shows the watering system, mineral feeding, fence setup, etc. in more detail, but wanted to go ahead and share this short one.

And yes, the cows are completely fenced into a new paddock every evening. We've had very good luck with long rectangular strips. We laid out our pasture with a long one-wire center fence between the permanent six-wire fence. So our rectangle just connects the exterior with the center fence. We have water line running down under the center fence with taps (Plasson valves that our regular hoses can plug into) every 100 feet or so. We use a small water tank that we empty and move to the new paddock every day. We also have a portable mineral feeder that we move with them every day.
